10 Ways to Improve Your Mood

We all have days when we’re not feeling our best. I thought I’d share 10 simple, feel-good tricks that help me invite more positive energy, improve mental health, and lift my mood.

All you need is the desire to feel happier and a willingness to take a few mindful steps toward it. Don't let bad mood ruin your day. After all, you'll never get to live this day over again.

1. Go for a Walk

If there’s only one thing you do from this list, let it be this. A walk is a proven way to get those endorphins flowing, boost your mood, and practice mindfulness. It’s also a fantastic way to stay present and practice self-care. Just go at a steady pace and observe your surroundings—people, animals, flowers—things you usually overlook. Walking helps you clear your mind and may even lead to insights or solutions to what's bothering you.

“If you’re in a bad mood, go for a walk. If you’re still in a bad mood, go for another walk.” —Hippocrates

2. Journal Your Feelings

Journaling feels like therapy and is an essential tool for improving mental health. It can be hard to start when you’re feeling low, but once you get the first sentence down, everything flows. Writing helps unravel your emotions and can reveal the true source of your frustration. For a more mindful experience, use our Mindfulness Journal. With morning and evening check-ins, it helps you build positive habits and focus on self-care. Journaling is a thoughtful way to stay connected with your emotions and practice daily reflection.

3. Do Something for Someone Else

There’s something magical about thoughtful, selfless acts. Whether it’s helping a friend or offering a kind gesture to a stranger, doing something for someone else can shift your focus away from your troubles and lift your spirits. Acts of kindness are not only good for the recipient but also a great mood booster for you.

4. Cook or Bake

I’m not a kitchen expert, but cooking or baking something new always lifts my mood and gives me a sense of accomplishment. Plus, you get to enjoy a delicious treat afterward! Pick a recipe, gather the ingredients, and give it a try. Engaging in creative, hands-on activities like cooking can reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

5. Visit a Coffee Shop

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need. For me, a cozy coffee shop with an almond milk cappuccino does the trick. Being in a lively, inspiring space helps me focus, and that shift in environment boosts my productivity and motivation. Whether you’re working on a project or just writing down ideas, the buzz of a coffee shop offers an ideal setting for inspiration and a mental health refresh.

6. Exercise

Exercise, like walking, releases endorphins, boosting your mood and overall mental health. You don’t have to do an intense workout—pick something you enjoy. Whether it’s a yoga session, a YouTube workout, or a quick 7-minute routine, getting your blood flowing is key to starting the day on a positive note. Physical activity is one of the best self-care practices for a happier, healthier life.

7. Tidy Up

Decluttering your space can work wonders for your mental state and mood. A quick tidy-up or full-on spring cleaning makes me feel more organised and motivated. I truly believe that a clutter-free environment mirrors a decluttered mind. Plus, donating clothes or reorganising your space can give you that sense of a fresh start and a mental health boost.

8. Practice Self-Love

Before making others happy, you need to focus on yourself. Self-love practices are key to building self-worth and improving your mood. For a simple and effective self-love activity, try using our Affirmation Cards. These thoughtful cards encourage positive self-talk and remind you of the power of the words you speak to yourself. Whether it’s meditating, dressing up, reading, or taking yourself out for the day, find what makes you feel good and embrace it. Practicing self-love is essential for long-term mental well-being.

9. Talk It Out

Sometimes, all you need is to talk. Reaching out to a friend or family member can lighten the emotional load. If talking isn’t your style, consider writing down your thoughts instead. Our Lined Notebooks are perfect for capturing your emotions and reflections when you need to get things off your chest. Whether you talk it out or write it down, expressing your feelings will help you release negative energy and take care of your mental health.

10. Watch an Inspiring Video

Whether it’s funny cat videos or inspiring TED Talks, watching something uplifting can shift your mood quickly. When I need a boost, TED Talks are my go-to for fresh perspectives and motivation. Here’s a favourite from Elizabeth Gilbert that never fails to inspire:

I hope these tips can help you the next time you need a mood-booster. Sending you extra love if you're needing it today.
