This is easily one of my favourite books that I’ve read in the last two years—definitely in my top three.
Perhaps the timing was right, or maybe it’s just that good, but I found it so relatable. I’ve been a fan of Mark Manson’s blog for a while, and having a physical copy of his wisdom by my bedside has been a game-changer. It’s a daily reminder to choose your battles wisely. Imagine how much more fulfilling life would be if we only focused on the things that genuinely matter to us!
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, unsure of your direction, or just in need of a fresh perspective on personal growth, responsibility, and achieving your goals—this book is a must-read. We live in a time of endless opportunities, and while that’s a blessing, it can also be overwhelming. So many people lose focus (I’ve been there), and it’s easy to feel like you’re drowning in choices. What I love about this book is how it breaks down essential thought patterns and actions that help you regain clarity and motivation.
Key Takeaways from The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck*
While most of my copy is highlighted, I’ve narrowed it down to a few standout lessons that have stuck with me—and I think they could resonate with you too, helping you define your values and focus on what matters most.
1. What Are You Willing to Struggle For?
“Pleasure is the easy question, and pretty much all of us have the same answer.”
This has become one of my favorite questions to ask myself. Understanding what you’re truly willing to struggle for brings so much clarity. It helps you focus your time and energy on the things that genuinely matter to you.
Personally, when we started The Inspired Stories, I knew two things: 1) I wanted to create something beautiful and valuable for others, and 2) I wanted to be my own boss. But between those two goals was a rollercoaster of confusion, fear, and stepping way out of my comfort zone. Despite the uncertainty, I knew I was willing to struggle for it. Looking back now, I can see how far we’ve come, and that belief keeps me going even when it’s tough. It’s not always easy, but the journey is worth it.
2. Always Ask "Why"
Asking yourself difficult questions—especially "why"—is key to self-awareness. It’s a powerful way to eliminate distractions and focus on what really matters. One of the most important things you can do is define what success looks like for you.
What does success mean to you? A big house? A luxury vacation? Or perhaps spending more time with loved ones, creating something that serves others, or simply feeling at peace? Getting clear on your definition of success will help you set goals that excite you and feel truly meaningful when you achieve them.
This self-questioning encourages growth, even if the answers are uncomfortable. The more you explore what truly matters to you, the more likely you’ll be able to align your actions with your values.
3. The Picasso Story: Failure is Key to Success
Manson shares an anecdote about Pablo Picasso that beautifully illustrates the importance of failure in achieving success. Picasso’s story is a reminder that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of it.
Failure builds the experiences that lead to growth, better decisions, and ultimately success. We need to embrace it, not fear it. The more we learn from our mistakes, the closer we get to where we want to be.
4. The "Do Something" Principle
One of the most practical takeaways from the book is the "Do Something" principle. Manson shares wisdom from his high school teacher: “If you're stuck on a problem, don't sit there and think about it; just start working on it.”
This principle has worked for me in every area of life. Whenever I feel stuck or unsure of where to start, I simply begin with research and small, actionable steps. Little by little, progress builds momentum. That’s the key—action invites inspiration, which in turn promotes motivation.
Even on the toughest days, taking small steps toward a goal can give you a sense of accomplishment and renew your drive. Focus on simple pleasures, and remember that even small actions can shift your mood and help you regain clarity.
