Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has enthusiastically supported the idea of the Book Club.
We love our community and the fact that you're just as passionate about inspiration, personal growth, self-improvement, and exploring new ideas as we are. We created this book club as an outlet where we can share our lessons, highlights, and takeaways on topics like mindfulness, motivation, well-being, happiness, personal development, and relationships—with both ourselves and others. We're so excited to connect, learn, and grow together!
The book we’re discussing today, Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom, contains many powerful messages about family, love, forgiveness, and focusing on what truly matters in life—topics echoed by many great authors. However, what sets this book apart is that it’s a real-life story about someone facing a terminal illness, yet Morrie, the central figure, faces his final days with incredible wisdom, peace, and mindfulness. It’s both inspiring and heart-wrenching.
Morrie, a beloved professor, shared a special connection with Mitch Albom, the author. Written with love and respect, Tuesdays with Morrie brings Morrie’s final lessons on life, self-reflection, and spiritual growth to readers. The book is a mix of personal insights and philosophy that dives deep into some of life’s most essential themes—love, responsibility, spirituality, and self-awareness.
We all take something different from the stories we read, based on where we are in life or our past experiences. For me, these are the key lessons from this beautiful, generous, and deeply touching story:
Creating Your Own Culture
“The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it. Create your own.”
Even as Morrie’s body was deteriorating, he didn't give in to self-pity. He embraced gratitude for the love and care surrounding him and considered himself lucky. Morrie created his own culture, filling his life with meaningful interactions, thoughtful ideas, and time spent in nature, rather than getting lost in distractions.
This message rings true. We have the power to choose what we want to cultivate in life—whether it’s the products we use, the people we surround ourselves with, or how we manage our time. It’s easy to get stuck in a cycle of comparison, but when you're excited about your own personal development and the projects you're passionate about, it becomes easier to focus on your journey instead of comparing yourself to others.
Morrie's story serves as a reminder to reflect: Are you living a meaningful life? Are you pursuing things that align with your core values? Are you practicing mindful living and choosing what truly matters?
Giving Means Living
“You know what really gives you satisfaction? Offering others what you have to give. Your time. Your concern. Your storytelling.”
Morrie’s take on society’s obsession with materialism is spot-on—we're often told that "more is better." But true satisfaction comes from giving, whether it's our time, our presence, or even our wisdom. Giving to others creates meaningful connections, deepens well-being, and makes us feel more alive.
In my own life, I’ve seen the joy that comes from giving. Whether it's being present for a friend or receiving an email from one of you, sharing how one of our diaries has inspired you on your self-care or self-love journey, those moments of giving bring the greatest happiness.
“When I give my time, when I can make someone smile after they were feeling sad, it's as close to healthy as I ever feel.”
If you’re searching for a story that’s both thought-provoking and offers gentle, yet powerful reminders about what really matters, I highly recommend adding Tuesdays with Morrie to your bookshelf. It’s a heartwarming tribute to a beloved mentor and a reminder to focus on the important things in life—mindfulness, self-reflection, and nurturing relationships that matter.
Thank you so much for being a part of the Dear Diary Book Club. We're excited to hear your thoughts, lessons, and highlights from this book. Please share your suggestions for April’s book choices in the comments—we can't wait to chat with you all!
With much love,
xx
